In October 2011, the Formula Kino cinema chain began working together with the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the largest supplier of alternative content for digital cinemas in North America. Six performances are planned to be screened for the 2011-2012 season, two of which have already been shown: Donizetti's Anna Bolena, with Anna Netrebko in the title role, and Mozart's Don Giovanni. Gounod's Faust, Verdi's Ernani and La Traviata, and Massenet's Manon are also to be screened. The live broadcasts are being organized by Mobile Russian TV, and the art association CoolConnections. A key element of the cooperation between the cinema chain and the renowned theatre is the condition of full exclusivity of the operatic productions. The cinema is not permitted to broadcast any other performances.
Operas have been screened in digital cinemas in Russia since 2009, the first of which were from La Scala in Milan, presented by the distribution company NEVAFILM EMOTION.
